Petty’s Island Field Photography Workshop

This 3-hour workshop is an introductory to field and nature photography, with an emphasis on taking your photography skills to the next level. Phil Witt will show you some of the island’s hidden gems and unique features. If you have a telephoto lens, bring it! Petty’s Island offers a great variety of birds both in the forest and on the surrounding mud flats. Spectacular panoramic views of Philadelphia will round out the experience. Phil will provide hands-on, personalized instruction and work with you on composition giving you tools and tips for determining the optimum exposure and cover many other topics to get you comfortable with your camera. Our goal is to help you learn…and of course, have fun along the way!

Celebrate Fall Migration on the Delaware River

This wooded island in the Delaware River is truly an urban oasis for woodland, wading and shore birds. Learn some interesting history along the way and discover how this industrial port is transforming into a wildlife sanctuary. Registration is REQUIRED for this trip. Grab your binoculars and join us for our Bald Eagle Walk in the Maurice River Bluffs Preserve! This preserve is an important spot for migrating and breeding Bald Eagles. Join us as we walk along the majestic bluffs that overlook the river, learn about the area, and keep an eye out for Bald Eagles!

Youth Birding on Petty’s Island

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m

This hike is open to youth ages 11 to 17 and their parent or guardian.
Adults attending MUST be accompanying a youth.

Join New Jersey Audubon and the New Jersey Young Birders Club for an exciting field trip to Petty’s Island. Learn about the island’s industrial past and its transformation to a wildlife sanctuary as we hike along the Delaware River looking for spring migrants. The varied habitats allow for opportunities to see a variety of birds (and other wildlife too!). Bring an adult along and enjoy this rare opportunity.

Children MUST be 12 and older (or 11 in grade 6) to participate and accompanied by an adult or in a group with an adult to child ratio of 1:7. Each child must have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. All adult chaperones must also have a signed waiver to participate. Registration is REQUIRED for this event; space is limited. Migration Madness Birding Walk and Ham Radio at Petty’s Island

Discover this hidden treasure in the Delaware River! With access granted only a few times a year, this urban oasis offers a great variety of wading, shore and woodland birds in addition to views of Bald Eagles. We will be looking for spring arrivals using the Delaware River to navigate and Petty’s Island to rest and nest. In addition, we will meet up with Gloucester County Amateur Radio club and make connections between their radio transmissions and bird migration patterns!
